Coconut Water " Good fi yuh Heart"

Good Morning REVEllers! Christmas has past and the new year is upon us! Here in Jamaica we have an old saying which goes " Coconut water wash off yuh heart " . This obviously is not a literal saying because you need all those fluids to keep your heart going . This simply means that drinking coconut water has many health benefits ; which you will find below.

  • The oral intake of coconut water helps in breaking down and eliminating all forms of kidney and bladder stones, one health benefit that is low cost effective, and can save thousand of dollars that would have been put out for medical bills.
  • It is known by many experts that coconut water contains the following supplements needed to sustain life:

- Glucose: which acts as sugar for energy in the body when taken
- Vitamin Bs: for replenishment of worn out cells and tissues
- Vitamin C: to shield the body form ailments like scurvy
- Potassium: which helps in lowering arterial blood pressure
  • Coconut water has been generally offered to patients with diarrhea in many tropic regions to replace the fluid loss from the gastrointestinal tract and reduce the need for intravenous therapy
  • Researchers have found that Cytokinins help regulate the cell growth and their divisions. Coconut Water contains these cytokinins and lauric acid which can minimize the aging of skin cells, balance PH levels, and keep the connective tissues strong and hydrated. Therefore, simply applying Coconut Water onto affected skin areas every night before going to bed may help with acne, age spots, wrinkles, stretch marks, cellulite, and eczema.
  • Coconut water is a natural electrolyte and isotonic beverage which help increase the body's metabolism. Therefore, it can greatly benefit people who are struggling with weight issues.
There are sooo many other health benefits of drinking Coconut water , i recommend doing extensive research beyond this post to see the ones not listed here .  I like my Coconut Water iced cold , how do you like yours?

The History of Boxing Day

While trying to find the main idea of what Boxing Day is and when it came about ... there were so many different explanations. I've summarised the most popular ones here below

To protect Ships

Traditionally , Boxing day originated in Britain during the "Age of Exploration " ( Columbus ) . Small boxes were given to sailors as a good luck device. This small box once it remained on the ship would bring good luck to the sailors on their voyage as it was blessed by the priest .

For the Poor

An "alms" box was placed in the Catholic Church somewhere around the 23rd and 24th of December . Each member of that church would place a small gift or token for the poor in the box. This box was always opened on the 26th ( the day after Christmas) which is why it is called "boxing day".

For workers

During the 18th Century , poorly paid workers were required to work on Christmas day , but got the day after Christmas off . As the workers were preparing to go off , their employees would send them off with small " Christmas Boxes " . This was done every year... and again ... thus the name Boxing Day.

Boxing day is celebrated on December 26th  in Britain , Canada and countries that were colonised by the British like Jamaica.

Shopping Tips for Christmas Eve

Good Morning REVEllers! Christmas is just 1 day away . I know most of you will be leaving your offices a bit earlier today to add the finishing touches on those decorations , get those last minute gifts and also get the final ingredients for those special dishes . The roads will be crazy later . So here are some tips on how to be safe on the streets and get the most out of your shopping :-))

  • Use the buddy system and shop with a friend. You are more likely to become a target if you are alone. Be sure that you have a list of the stores you want to go to in mind before leaving home . Criminals can easily spot people who have no idea where they are going and always "fumbling" around.
  • Park your car in a well-lit area and keep track of where it's parked. This will get you in your car and on your way faster. I know it will be reaaallllyyyyy hard to find a "good: parking area around this time of year , but i would recommend staying away from those parking areas that say " vehicles are parked at owners risk " . This is basically saying " There are no security guards or fences , therefore if your car gets stolen or you get robbed .. we don't care .. we told you so ".
  • Be careful what you post online. Don't alert others that you aren't at home. I can never understand why people with I-Phones feel they need to check into every location on Foursquare . Do they get points for checking in to places ? You are literally sending an invitation to all sorts of crazy people. People , please stop doing it , they are criminals out there just waiting to know where you are so they can mob you .
  • Wear your purse across the body to keep your hands free for your keys, both when heading to your car and into your home.To all my Fashionistas ( like myself who love over sized bags) Opt for a cross body bag . Criminals will see a big bag and assume its full of money!
  • Be just as vigilant about your surroundings during the daylight hours. A crime can occur at any time. I see ladies especially do this , they walk as if they live in a country where there is no crime . Blackberry or whatever posh phone in hand "flashing" around as if they are saying "hey look at me .. im sooo rich i have my phone in hand and its not even being used , come rob me". Be careful! If you notice that every store you go into you see the same guy in that orange shirt and yellow pants ( for example) ... it means you are being followed . Every now and again .. you should take several quick glances around you to see if you keep seeing a particular person.
  • Wear Less Jewellery! That's self explanatory so i don't really need to get into this one
I know its Christmas and its all about Peace and Joy and having that Christmas spirit , but not everyone share these sentiments . There are people who wait on this time of year to prowl on those people who've worked hard all year long and easily take all that away in a matter of seconds.

Honey and Pear Invigorating Hair Treatment/Mask

Christmas is only 5 days away  :-) I don't know about you , but i am super excited . At Reve we always use the resources that are around us to create auh mazing pieces . Today , i will tell you how you can use two very simple ingredients that you probably have in your kitchen to bring life to your hair.

Honey and Pear Invigorating  Hair Treatment

You will need :
  • A medium size pear
  • 2 Tablespoons of Honey
  • 1 Tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil ( brand of your choice)
The Steps :
  • Peel pear and set aside in a bowl
  • Mash pear and add liquid ingredients. Continue to combine the ingredients until you notice the texture getting smoother.
  • Massage into hair
  • Leave for 20-30 mins . If you have a steam cap , this would even be better as this mixture will be  evenly penetrated into the scalp for even better results.
  • Wash hair as usual

The Benefits

Pear ( Avocado) is used in a lot of beauty treatments . Applying an Avocado mask as a deep conditioner to your hair a few times per month helps to keep your hair moisturised and shiny. Avocados are also used for preventing hair loss and promotes healthy hair growth . Avocados are high in vitamin B and E which work together to protect and strengthen hair . A great alternative to the Avocado Mask is simply adding the Avocado to your conditioner . Healthy hair grows half an inch every month and using Avocado promotes regular hair growth.

Ladies , you don't have to be a slave to high end products that may not even be for your specific hair type . I've found that simple ingredients that contain a high amount of vitamins work alot better than those expensive commercial products . I recommend doing your own research on the ingredients and experiment to see what works for your hair .

Natural / Organic Soaps at Reve!

Fashionistas , Naturalistas and REVEllers ; We now carry Natural /Organic Soaps at Reve . As you might have known , we support all aspects of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and that also includes skincare . Below you will see 3 of the soaps we carry as well as some of their benefits and general information .

Coconut Milk Verbena

Coconut Milk Verbena Bars are cool and crisp scented. Coconut Milk is rich in calcium and protein and is great for keeping the skin hydrated and moisturised . Coconut milk is ideal for dry skin and offers a deep clean . Lathering up this soap is like getting all the health benefits of Coconut into your skin . Verbena helps fight skin infections , calms your mood and moisturises your skin all at once . Verbena is extremely useful for relieving stress and helps to relax your mind. If you work in a stressful environment or going through a difficult time , i highly recommend this soap . You might be surprised what a simple bar of soap can do.

Sweet Orange & Ylang Ylang ( ling ling)

This soap has a lovely fruity flowery citrus smell and has great moisturising qualities . Orange contains Vitamin C which is great for bringing life back into your skin . Ylang Ylang is generally great for all skin types .

Ylang Ylang & Peppermint

This soap is enriched with all the goodness of ground Peppermint . This simply means the peppermint used is in its natural state , no artificial ingredients have been added . Both ingredients combined is great as an exfoliant . This soap is minty , strong and fresh with a cooling effect on the body and has anti- bacterial properties . Ylang Ylang oil is often used in aromatherapy and is recommended for dry skin .

When making the conscious decision to switch from commercial beauty related products to Natural/Organic products , it is not recommended to mix the two . If you decide to go the natural/ organic always try to only use those products . That way your body will become aware of the change and begin to make "cell" preparations . While I've mentioned only 3 soaps in this posts , we also carry other scents .  Visit us at Shop #13 Devon House , Kingston Jamaica to see what we have in store :-)
