Fun Facts, Fun Jewellery – The Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda Triangle by Rêve Jewellery & Accessories

Nothing gets lost in this beautiful earring designed by our Director of Concept and Production, Duane Bennett. It's name and design gives a nod to the popular Bermuda Triangle. Some of you may not know exactly what the urban legend of the Bermuda Triangle is, so here is the first fun fact post to tell you all about it.

The Bermuda Triangle
Also known as the Devil's triangle, the Bermuda Triangle is an undefined region in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean where aircrafts and ships have been said to mysteriously disappear.

Here is an extract from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Some speculate that unknown and mysterious forces account for the unexplained disappearances, such as extraterrestrials capturing humans for study; the influence of the lost continent of Atlantis; vortices that suck objects into other dimensions; and other whimsical ideas.  Some explanations are more grounded in science, if not in evidence.  These include oceanic flatulence (methane gas erupting from ocean sediments) and disruptions in geomagnetic lines of flux.

Environmental considerations could explain many, if not most, of the disappearances.  The majority of Atlantic tropical storms and hurricanes pass through the Bermuda Triangle, and in the days prior to improved weather forecasting, these dangerous storms claimed many ships.  Also, the Gulf Stream can cause rapid, sometimes violent, changes in weather.  Additionally, the large number of islands in the Caribbean Sea creates many areas of shallow water that can be treacherous to ship navigation. And there is some evidence to suggest that the Bermuda Triangle is a place where a “magnetic” compass sometimes points towards “true” north, as opposed to “magnetic” north.

Still, most official bodies do not attribute and extraterrestrial or supernatural explanations for any alleged disappearances within the triangle. Also, many disappearances have taken place all over the world and are not exclusive to the Bermuda Triangle.

One this is certain, nothing gets lost in this Bermuda Triangle earring designed by Duane Bennett.

Monday Music | All I Want Is You by Michael Franti

Talk about a good Monday morning groove. Rêve loves to work with talented people so it was an absolute honor to provide jewellery for Michael Franti "All I Want is You" music video. Not only is Franti a ridiculous talent but just a great guy to know. Thanks for blessing us by allowing us to be on set. It was a great time. And yes, our jewellery looked great in the video but we were definitely upstaged by the music. Nuff love Franti!

Michael Franti (born April 21, 1966) is an American poet, musician, and composer. He is the creator and lead vocalist of Michael Franti & Spearhead, a band that blends hip hop with a variety of other styles including funkreggaejazzfolk, and rock. He is also an outspoken supporter for a wide spectrum of peace and social justice issues.

Q&A Tuesday | Custom Jewellery Orders

QUESTION

Hello Rêve Team,

Do you make custom orders. For example, if I have a symbol that I wanted to make pendants for as gifts, do you do such special orders? If so what is your minimum quantity?

Thanks,
Daz

ANSWER

Hello Daz.

Thanks for your question. Yes we do and love working on these special items. Our director of design and concept Duane offers a complementary (FREE) consultation to private clients and corporate companies who commission his services to create their desired design in any of the metals of GOLD (yellow & White), Sterling Silver, Brass, Bronze and Copper that we use.

We do not have a minimum quantity. Give us a call to make an appointment for your free consultation.

Some of the non-traditional private Commissions from Duane (Rêve™) that are memorable include:

  • a couple who enjoyed hunting and the wild outdoors together was not sure how they could have something that reflect their love and bond in a “non-traditional” Wedding band. Duane created a fusion of Polished Cow Horn and White Gold together and they loved it!
  • another non-traditional Wedding band set that was fashioned by the designer was a  clean sophisticated White Gold set that captured the delicate imprint of the couples finger prints in the inner part of the rings… hidden to the world but shared by them.
  • corporate companies who have also commissioned our talented goldsmith to make specific pieces for Jamaican icons, celebrities and clients.

How to Know the Difference Between Coconut & Calabash Jewellery

It's a question we get often. Is this coconut or calabash? We love incorporating the multi-purpose Calabash & Coconut husks into the authentic designs we create. Let me gladly point out that both the Calabash & Coconut products are long loved and used for years by diverse Jamaican artisans…and for good reasons.

Perhaps the “natural” attraction of the popular organic Calabash and Coconut is in the beauty of the material and its versatility. It can be used polished or unpolished, varnished or unvarnished and can be cut into many different shapes and styles.

Coconut and Calabash made jewellery and accessories both add to the authenticity and feel of the unique Caribbean style and culture. They add spice to almost any outfit and are versatile enough to be worn by either sex. Many persons (Jamaicans and visitors) don’t know the difference between the Coconut & the Calabash; but can you recognize the difference between the two?

Here are some characteristics:
  • they are both very durable and brown in appearance.
  • Coconut is more dense, thus is heavier .
  • Coconut also has a richer shade of brown (just like dark chocolate) in comparison to its counterpart the Calabash. Once you get to know them, it is pretty easy to tell the difference.
  • Calabash, though lighter, does not break as easily.

I must admit that we have a bias and we at Rêve really do enjoy working the Calabash more than the Coconut for several reasons:
  • We find it to be an easier material to cut out and carve into compared to the thicker shell of the Coconut.
  • Calabash is very porous, so you can dye it to create a variety of colours and shades, so we can go a bold with our designs as we like and our RȆVEllers love that!
  • As mentioned before, it more durable than the Coconut.

THE BIG BONUS
You can enjoy the most dramatic of Ear-Rings without the sacrifice of the heavy weight, strain or pressure on  the ear lobes….and when worn around the neckline, there is little or no discomfort to that of beads or stones that many trendy designs are guilty of sometimes causing.

So, the next time you are browsing our online store, booth display at an event  or our stopping in at the showroom in Kingston, Jamaica be sure to pick up a few our authentic and original designs incorporating the Calabash and Coconut pieces for yourself or a friend… you will be glad you did!

Budget Bridal Jewellery Tips – Rêve Bridal Special

Weddings are usually expensive but, your wedding jewellery doesn't have to be. In today's post we'll be giving you some simple tips and tricks for selecting inexpensive wedding jewellery and looking beautiful on your wedding day.

TIP 1. DON'T OVER-ACCESSORISE or OVER-SPEND

Hair slides and knobs available at Rêve for only $600 JMD
You don't have to wear jewellery. Yes, you read right. If your outfit is highly embellished with sequins and tons of layers, adding jewellery to the mix can make you look overdone. You can also opt for very simple, inexpensive, high-quality faux pieces pieces. Rêve is currently having a bridal special for two hair slides and matching faux pearl studs for only 600 Jamaican dollars in our Devon House (Kingston, Jamaica) store. That is less than 8 US dollars! These would be perfect for a busy dress. The sale is on while supplies last. Get your pair now.

TIP 2.  STAY TRUE TO YOU

Source – naughtyshorts.blogspot.com

We don't really want you to overdo it but you should wear jewellery that reflects your personality. If you are simple, go simple. If you like drama, go for that. It is your day and you are the one who should feel absolutely beautiful.

TIP 3.  CONSIDER YOUR HAIRSTYLE

Curly haired bride opting for hair accessories
Consider your hairstyle or headpiece. You don't want your drop earrings getting tangled in your beautiful drop curls at every turn. Select jewellery that will work with your hair. Some women opt to wear jewellery that matches the dresses of their bridesmaids. This is fine but also consider how it may work with your hair colour as well. Oh, and don't forget to try the jewellery on with the selected hairstyle and headpiece (or something close to it) to see whether you like it at all.

TIP 4.  RENT  YOUR JEWELLERY

Beautiful bride in hand-made jewellery from Rêve.
As you can see in the picture above, Rêve does custom hand-made pieces for weddings. You can also rent pieces from the store as well. We can even take a look at your dress and suggest styles that may work well for you. Check with your favourite goldsmith to see whether this is a real option for you or contact Rêve today (revejewellery2006@gmail.com). Check out one of our popular rented pieces below.

TIP 5.  REMEMBER THE BRIDESMAIDS

Source – TheKnot.com

Wearing jewellery that clashes with your bridesmaids can be a disaster. Keep them uniformed in simple and inexpensive jewellery.  Since it will most likely be in your style and may not be their preference, opt for faux diamonds or pearls and try to buy them well in advance. They could also be your gift to them for participating.

TIP 6.  FIRST THINGS FIRST & LAST THINGS LAST

What should you select first? Utilise your wedding organiser. First, figure out what are you most attached to. If you're all about your jewellery, select that first then build everything around it. If you're most excited about the dress, focus on building from there onwards. Lastly and most importantly, try EVERYTHING on together. This will ensure that you are 100% happy with your choices before the big day. Write your schedule down when you begin planning and stick to your schedule as closely as possible to avoid the last-minute rush.

TIP 6.  DON'T DELAY

Get your selected items way in advance. You can always tweak closer to the date. The truth is that things don't stay in stores forever. Try it and buy it now so that you can be sure that you will have it on your big day. If you change your mind, sell it on eBay. LOL.

RÊVE JEWELLERY BRIDAL SPECIAL

Today's post was inspired by the BRIDAL SPECIAL  that we currently have in our Devon House store. Get a pair of faux pearl studs and matching slides for just $600! It's definitely a steal and nobody will know that the pearls are real. Keep it simple and

How to Manage a Nickel (Jewellery) Allergy

Nickel Jewellery Allergy

Ever wonder why your ears keep itching every time you wear jewellery? You may have a nickel allergy. That, however isn't the only symptom that can appear within 6 to 24 hours of wearing nickel jewellery. If you are not sure, your doctor can administer simple tests to help with diagnosis. If you are interested in diagnosing yourself, symptoms of nickel allergy include:

  • itching
  • redness
  • dry patches
  • rash
  • blisters
  • swelling
Some treatments include creams and antihistamine pills. The best way to avoid all of these expensive treatments, however, if to avoid nickel.

How to Avoid Nickel Allergies
  • Buy your favourite earrings and get the backings or posts changed to hypo-allergenic materials to which you aren't allergic. Rêve will amend almost any earring to make it wearable and allergy-free for your use and enjoyment.
  • Get your wedding rings made by a jeweller. Rêve does custom made pieces as well. Just email your request and desired design to revejewellery2006@gmail.com
  • If  you already have your wedding ring, it can be plated.
  • Choose your piercing studio carefully and ensure that your piercings and tattoos are done with sterile, surgical-grade stainless steel instruments.
  • Buy titanium or plastic glasses and jewellery.
  • When shopping, look for jewellery labelled hypo-allergenic.
  • White gold often contains nickel so just avoid it unless your jeweller can confirm that it does not contain the metal and ensure that
  • Nickel-free metals include copper, platinum, titanium and 14 karat gold (or higher).
  • Avoid metal watch bands and  wear those made of leather, cloth or plastic.

Celebrity stylist, Felicia Leatherwood poses with Duane of Rêve

It was the Thursday afternoon of Jamaica Observer's Take Style Out and celebrity stylist Felicia Leatherwood, a friend and Nettle & Moss owner, Aisha came by Devon House for a double scoop of ice-cream and a double-dose of style. Stylist to stars like Jill Scott and Viola Davis, Felicia was in town for Jamaica Observer's Take Style Out to speak at a natural hair event being held by Nettle & Moss.

Felicia went home with the gold earring from the Fallen Leaves 2014 Collection by Rêve Jewellery very well. Check out her picture below.

Did we mention that Felicia is a ton-load of fun? We had the best time. And, yes, she loved Duane's hair. Of course, great compliment from a celebrity hair stylist.

As mentioned earlier, the lovely Aisha Morgan of Nettle & Moss was also there. Check her out in the Rêve Glistening Waters Couture Necklace. She wore it for her event that night and she looks gorgeous. Her simple black dress was a most appropriate compliment.

André Shirley leads the final walk down the runway

Fashion Line: Anarcy
By: André Shirley
From: Kingston, Jamaica
Designing Since: 2006

Male and female Anarcy designs

Rêve: Why did you start Anarcy?

André: Having a small build, I couldn't get clothes to fit my body size. Plus, it was always an intention from a younger age. Still, I designed womenswear for sale first but only designed men's clothes for myself.

André Shirley, Owner and Designer at Anarcy

Rêve: So you started Anarcy in 2006. How has the ride as a Jamaican business owner been so far?

André: It's been good. Each year the designs and the line's popularity grows. I keep learning new techniques plus last year I premiered my menswear collection at Style Week Jamaica 2012.

Anarcy Menswear

Rêve: Congratulations! So, what inspires your designs?

André: My mood, trying new techniques, people I socialise with, and even my clients inspire my designs. I think the main thing though, is the economical climate... I do't want to overprice and not be able to reach my clients.

Another beautiful Anarcy design

VENDER PROFILE | Sherelle of Asherlee Naturals

Name: Mrs Sherelle Curtis
Owner of: Asherlee Naturals
From: Jamaica

Rêve: What is Asherlee Naturals?
Sherelle: Asherlee Naturals is all about educating, and promoting healthy hair with better products confronting the myths about your hair. We manufacture locally made products, giving you a choice, maximizing the use of gentle, nourishing and all-natural ingredients that cater to your unique needs.

Sherelle with short natural hair

Rêve: Why (and when) did you start Asherlee Naturals?
Sherelle: The healthy hair bug bit me hard: so hard my big-chop experience was almost immediate.

My fight the power mindset fed my appetite: and after reading, nit-picking, I was soon only left with ingredients. For no one product was ideal, nor did what it said it would. I thought more and more, natural ingredients, they don't lie. I became a healthy hair campaigner and my own tester: my world soon became a stack and pile of potions.

With this knowledge I had a zeal to empower women out of all the hair myths and lies they've be told. Friends, and family encouraged my passion into a business and after some brainstorming I birth Asherlee Naturals with the help of my hubby in January 2013.

Sherelle's Hot Oil Treatment's features all-natural Ingredients

Rêve: Why did you decide to have an all-natural product line when they are notoriously more expensive to produce?
Sherelle: These days people are looking for a healthy alternative to hair care. I believe your mind and your health are more important than money, and I also believe you do too.

What I needed to know and believe before I decided on Asherlee Naturals was that results after using my product would speak much more about your hair's health than one can pay for brand names that just don't work. Higher spending won't contribute to your healthy hair but your motivation to buy Asherlee's products will fall squarely on using our products the way we teach you to which will give you the results you have always wanted.

Rêve: What are the price ranges of your products?
Sherelle: JMD $850 - $1250

Sherelle explains how to use her products at a recent expo

Rêve: Are your products only for people with natural hair?
Sherelle: No! My products are for persons who are in pursuit of a healthier way to love your hair.

Rêve: So, you'll be at the 2013 Rêve Wellness Festival on August 10 at Devon House selling your products and we look forward to seeing you there. Before you go, what does Wellness mean to you?
Sherelle: Loving yourself down to the ingredient :) and I am not limiting this to haircare.
