Coconut Water " Good fi yuh Heart"

Good Morning REVEllers! Christmas has past and the new year is upon us! Here in Jamaica we have an old saying which goes " Coconut water wash off yuh heart " . This obviously is not a literal saying because you need all those fluids to keep your heart going . This simply means that drinking coconut water has many health benefits ; which you will find below.

  • The oral intake of coconut water helps in breaking down and eliminating all forms of kidney and bladder stones, one health benefit that is low cost effective, and can save thousand of dollars that would have been put out for medical bills.
  • It is known by many experts that coconut water contains the following supplements needed to sustain life:

- Glucose: which acts as sugar for energy in the body when taken
- Vitamin Bs: for replenishment of worn out cells and tissues
- Vitamin C: to shield the body form ailments like scurvy
- Potassium: which helps in lowering arterial blood pressure
  • Coconut water has been generally offered to patients with diarrhea in many tropic regions to replace the fluid loss from the gastrointestinal tract and reduce the need for intravenous therapy
  • Researchers have found that Cytokinins help regulate the cell growth and their divisions. Coconut Water contains these cytokinins and lauric acid which can minimize the aging of skin cells, balance PH levels, and keep the connective tissues strong and hydrated. Therefore, simply applying Coconut Water onto affected skin areas every night before going to bed may help with acne, age spots, wrinkles, stretch marks, cellulite, and eczema.
  • Coconut water is a natural electrolyte and isotonic beverage which help increase the body's metabolism. Therefore, it can greatly benefit people who are struggling with weight issues.
There are sooo many other health benefits of drinking Coconut water , i recommend doing extensive research beyond this post to see the ones not listed here .  I like my Coconut Water iced cold , how do you like yours?

The History of Boxing Day

While trying to find the main idea of what Boxing Day is and when it came about ... there were so many different explanations. I've summarised the most popular ones here below

To protect Ships

Traditionally , Boxing day originated in Britain during the "Age of Exploration " ( Columbus ) . Small boxes were given to sailors as a good luck device. This small box once it remained on the ship would bring good luck to the sailors on their voyage as it was blessed by the priest .

For the Poor

An "alms" box was placed in the Catholic Church somewhere around the 23rd and 24th of December . Each member of that church would place a small gift or token for the poor in the box. This box was always opened on the 26th ( the day after Christmas) which is why it is called "boxing day".

For workers

During the 18th Century , poorly paid workers were required to work on Christmas day , but got the day after Christmas off . As the workers were preparing to go off , their employees would send them off with small " Christmas Boxes " . This was done every year... and again ... thus the name Boxing Day.

Boxing day is celebrated on December 26th  in Britain , Canada and countries that were colonised by the British like Jamaica.

Shopping Tips for Christmas Eve

Good Morning REVEllers! Christmas is just 1 day away . I know most of you will be leaving your offices a bit earlier today to add the finishing touches on those decorations , get those last minute gifts and also get the final ingredients for those special dishes . The roads will be crazy later . So here are some tips on how to be safe on the streets and get the most out of your shopping :-))

  • Use the buddy system and shop with a friend. You are more likely to become a target if you are alone. Be sure that you have a list of the stores you want to go to in mind before leaving home . Criminals can easily spot people who have no idea where they are going and always "fumbling" around.
  • Park your car in a well-lit area and keep track of where it's parked. This will get you in your car and on your way faster. I know it will be reaaallllyyyyy hard to find a "good: parking area around this time of year , but i would recommend staying away from those parking areas that say " vehicles are parked at owners risk " . This is basically saying " There are no security guards or fences , therefore if your car gets stolen or you get robbed .. we don't care .. we told you so ".
  • Be careful what you post online. Don't alert others that you aren't at home. I can never understand why people with I-Phones feel they need to check into every location on Foursquare . Do they get points for checking in to places ? You are literally sending an invitation to all sorts of crazy people. People , please stop doing it , they are criminals out there just waiting to know where you are so they can mob you .
  • Wear your purse across the body to keep your hands free for your keys, both when heading to your car and into your home.To all my Fashionistas ( like myself who love over sized bags) Opt for a cross body bag . Criminals will see a big bag and assume its full of money!
  • Be just as vigilant about your surroundings during the daylight hours. A crime can occur at any time. I see ladies especially do this , they walk as if they live in a country where there is no crime . Blackberry or whatever posh phone in hand "flashing" around as if they are saying "hey look at me .. im sooo rich i have my phone in hand and its not even being used , come rob me". Be careful! If you notice that every store you go into you see the same guy in that orange shirt and yellow pants ( for example) ... it means you are being followed . Every now and again .. you should take several quick glances around you to see if you keep seeing a particular person.
  • Wear Less Jewellery! That's self explanatory so i don't really need to get into this one
I know its Christmas and its all about Peace and Joy and having that Christmas spirit , but not everyone share these sentiments . There are people who wait on this time of year to prowl on those people who've worked hard all year long and easily take all that away in a matter of seconds.

Honey and Pear Invigorating Hair Treatment/Mask

Christmas is only 5 days away  :-) I don't know about you , but i am super excited . At Reve we always use the resources that are around us to create auh mazing pieces . Today , i will tell you how you can use two very simple ingredients that you probably have in your kitchen to bring life to your hair.

Honey and Pear Invigorating  Hair Treatment

You will need :
  • A medium size pear
  • 2 Tablespoons of Honey
  • 1 Tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil ( brand of your choice)
The Steps :
  • Peel pear and set aside in a bowl
  • Mash pear and add liquid ingredients. Continue to combine the ingredients until you notice the texture getting smoother.
  • Massage into hair
  • Leave for 20-30 mins . If you have a steam cap , this would even be better as this mixture will be  evenly penetrated into the scalp for even better results.
  • Wash hair as usual

The Benefits

Pear ( Avocado) is used in a lot of beauty treatments . Applying an Avocado mask as a deep conditioner to your hair a few times per month helps to keep your hair moisturised and shiny. Avocados are also used for preventing hair loss and promotes healthy hair growth . Avocados are high in vitamin B and E which work together to protect and strengthen hair . A great alternative to the Avocado Mask is simply adding the Avocado to your conditioner . Healthy hair grows half an inch every month and using Avocado promotes regular hair growth.

Ladies , you don't have to be a slave to high end products that may not even be for your specific hair type . I've found that simple ingredients that contain a high amount of vitamins work alot better than those expensive commercial products . I recommend doing your own research on the ingredients and experiment to see what works for your hair .

Natural / Organic Soaps at Reve!

Fashionistas , Naturalistas and REVEllers ; We now carry Natural /Organic Soaps at Reve . As you might have known , we support all aspects of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and that also includes skincare . Below you will see 3 of the soaps we carry as well as some of their benefits and general information .

Coconut Milk Verbena

Coconut Milk Verbena Bars are cool and crisp scented. Coconut Milk is rich in calcium and protein and is great for keeping the skin hydrated and moisturised . Coconut milk is ideal for dry skin and offers a deep clean . Lathering up this soap is like getting all the health benefits of Coconut into your skin . Verbena helps fight skin infections , calms your mood and moisturises your skin all at once . Verbena is extremely useful for relieving stress and helps to relax your mind. If you work in a stressful environment or going through a difficult time , i highly recommend this soap . You might be surprised what a simple bar of soap can do.

Sweet Orange & Ylang Ylang ( ling ling)

This soap has a lovely fruity flowery citrus smell and has great moisturising qualities . Orange contains Vitamin C which is great for bringing life back into your skin . Ylang Ylang is generally great for all skin types .

Ylang Ylang & Peppermint

This soap is enriched with all the goodness of ground Peppermint . This simply means the peppermint used is in its natural state , no artificial ingredients have been added . Both ingredients combined is great as an exfoliant . This soap is minty , strong and fresh with a cooling effect on the body and has anti- bacterial properties . Ylang Ylang oil is often used in aromatherapy and is recommended for dry skin .

When making the conscious decision to switch from commercial beauty related products to Natural/Organic products , it is not recommended to mix the two . If you decide to go the natural/ organic always try to only use those products . That way your body will become aware of the change and begin to make "cell" preparations . While I've mentioned only 3 soaps in this posts , we also carry other scents .  Visit us at Shop #13 Devon House , Kingston Jamaica to see what we have in store :-)

Tears of the Moon : Silver Fox Earrings

Good Morning REVEllers :-) The countdown to Christmas is underway , would you believe that Christmas is only 8 days away ? That's right ... with Christmas comes new one of a kind accessories here at Reve . Today we'll be looking at 2 Earrings from the Tears of The Moon Collection. Both pieces are simply referred to as "Silver Fox" and you are about to see why.

Silver Fox Earrings 1

First of all , you will never go into another store in Jamaica and find these earrings , Sure you will see the ones that have been mass produced that may kinda sorta look similar , but not these Reve Earrings. These beautiful earrings are made from Aluminium and features a medium square as a base , then 3 strip like pieces that hang from the squares . These remind me of chandelier earrings ( with an edge of course)

Style it !

In keeping with the Trends for Christmas ( post coming soon) , i would keep things simple and opt for a Monochromatic Outfit , such as Winter White or everybody's  favorite Cobalt Blue. I love statement pieces and these earrings definitely make a statement . They say "look at me , I'm stylish and unique" .

Silver Fox Earrings 2

I would describe the shape of these earrings as "abstract" as they are not exactly rectangular . They have A-symmetrical edges and are made of Aluminium . These pieces are a bit simpler than the previous earrings but can still be dressed up with whatever you like.

Style It!

These are great for the daytime for a simple casual look . I would pair it with a nice white/black button down shirt , a pair of dark skinny jeans and a pair of nude pumps . Option 2: A Maxi Dress . You can never go wrong with a maxi dress. Also , because these earrings are "one" piece , i would add a nice watch ( Michal Kors) and maybe one of those really small necklaces that you can only see when you get really close to a person.

We Have Solid Lotion !

T.G.I.F REVEllers ! You just read that correctly , we now sell Solid Lotion . I know literally everybody is familiar with lotion in its liquid form , but this new phenomenon is taking off fast!

Solid Lotion Bars are simply lotion ... without the water . They are so meticulously created that it melts at body temperature when applied to the skin . They are made from blended wax , butters and oils . Solid Lotions can be used regularly , but is best for the treatment of very dry skin .

Since solid lotion is a heavy-duty moisturising bar, it is most often recommended for the treatment of rough patches of skin. Areas that undergo a lot of exposure, such as the heels or the elbows, are optimum places for a solid moisturiser to be used. Some users have also reported success in treating the skin condition eczema with the use of a solid lotion. This product can also be used for stretch marks and for that area under your nose that gets really raw and chapped after "intense wiping" during cold and allergy season.

How To Use it

Twist up from the bottom and glide over skin . APPLY SPARINGLY , a little goes a long way . You might think that because its a bar you might need to literally paste it on your skin for you to feel like its there , but trust me , all you need is a little in the area of your skin that is the driest and you can even use your fingers to spread it evenly on your skin. A small bar can last for months even with regular use   For even better results , allow to absorb into skin for 1-2 minutes after application.

(See the video below)

Some of the benefits of Solid Lotion are :
  • There are no artificial or synthetic ingredients in them.  Compared to liquid lotions, they are very concentrated and compact (most liquid lotions are 70%-80% water)
  • The effect is not greasy because the absorbent oils used to make this product is light , but very high in nutrients
  • It is safe to travel with . With all the new airline rules and restrictions of certain cosmetic and personal items such as lotions , you can easily get away with travelling with this product in your handbag :-)
The type of Solid Lotion we carry at Reve is the Madina brand that comes in a medium size cylindrical shape tube , quite similar to lip balm or chap stick . They are available in scents such as : Orange Sweet Vanilla and Grapefruit .

Stop by today to pick up your Solid lotion ! They are great as gifts , great for your cosmetic bags and most of all great for your skin !

Jewellery By Birthstones

Good Morning REVEllers ! we are just one day away from the weekend . I know most of you are excited to get to sleep a bit later in bed , some of you might dread it because you have to spend money because its the  Christmas  Season :-) While we are on that note , today i would like to share with you some tips on what to buy for your loved ones according to their birthstone :-) Did you know that apart from Electronics , Jewellery is the top thing people ask for on their wishlists? Before i go any further .. let's jump into it shall we

Please note: Your birthstone can come in a number of different sizes and Colours

January - Garnet : This symbolizes Eternity , Truth and Faith

Garnet is found in the greatest variety of colours of any gemstone, occurring

in every colour except blue. The most common colour for garnet, however,
is a beautiful rich red

February -Amethyst : This symbolizes Health , Luck and Wit

Amethyst ranges from light to deep purple.

Amethyst is perfect for all forms of jewellery

March - Aquamarine : This symbolizes Understanding and happiness

The March birthstone, aquamarine, is always pastel blue,
although the darker the colour the more valuable

the stone.

April - Diamond  : This symbolizes Eternity , Courage and Health

From the word adamas, meaning unconquerable, the diamond is the

ultimate symbol of love, the best example being the engagement ring
When looking for a diamond, always consider the 4 Cs - carat

claritycut and colour.

May - Emerald : This symbolizes Goddess , Fidelity and Love

Ideal for both classic and contemporary style jewellery,

and earrings, this gem is valued in much the
same way as diamonds by cut, clarity and colour.
A perfect gem for gifts, whether or not
it is the birth month.

June - Pearl : This symbolizes Nobility ,Beauty and Peace

Pearl comes in various shades, including

shimmering white and glistening pink.

July - Ruby : This symbolizes Enthusiasm , Strength and Love

The deep red of ruby has long been associated with religion and spiritual matters.

The birthstone ruby is second only to diamond for hardness. Ruby is a variety
of the mineral corundum.

August - Peridot : This symbolizes Success , Peace and Luck

An olive or bottle green stone, peridot is the perfect centrepiece for pendants
earrings and rings. In Roman times it was referred to as evening emerald

as it did not lose its lustre at night but was still visible by lamplight.

September- Sapphire : This symbolizes Serenity and Truth

The natural colours of sapphire, sky blues, deep blues

and flower petal pink bring to mind images of nature,
spring days and fresh air. Sapphire is a beautiful,
natural, evocative gem, ideal for earrings

October - Opal :This symbolizes Wisdom , Purity and Hope

The most important criteria when valuing opal is the

play of the colour, but we also consider the
thickness, cut, patterning, weight and finish.
This gemstone captures the imagination
and inspires legends - a fantastic gem
for jewellery and gifts.

November - Topaz : This symbolizes  Sincerity , Wisdom and Courage

Topaz comes in a variety of colours, including white, yellow

and blue. Blue topaz is most commonly used in jewellery and is the perfect
centerpiece for ringspendants and earrings. This beautiful gemstone is
the ideal birthstone gift.

December - Tanzanite : This symbolizes Prosperity ,Happiness and Health

Turquoise varies in colour,

from blue to green, depending on the balance of copper
and iron in its make up. The most desirable turquoise
is believed to be the sky blue gem from Persia, however
in Tibet greener turquoise is equally prized. The highest
quality turquoise is pure, radiant and sky blue.

Every month is represented by a beautiful birthstone that has designated qualities associated with it.  I actually did this post because i thought all Birthstones once they represented a certain month , they would have that one look . I had no idea the various stones came in different colors. My Birthstone is Amethyst , but i'm honestly not a huge fan of purple , so i figured that from now on , i'll just pretend that i was born in April . Diamonds are Forever :-)

Stop By Reve today to see if we have your Birthstone in Stock .

In Flight Fitness ! Exercises to do on a Plane

Good Morning REVEllers , you must think i have gone completely off my rockers :-) It was just last year while i was en route to Tennessee , i saw a lady doing some crazy moves . Being as inquisitive as i am , i asked her what she was doing and she told me she was exercising . In the travel industry , December is described as "Peak Season" , more people travel during this time than any other season. People are travelling to be with loved ones or go on vacation . Today, i would like to share with you exercises you can do ... while in flight :-) These tips will be extremely beneficial to most of you who will be having those long connecting flights where you are sitting for hours.

Exercise #1: Leg Lifts

Sit on your seat. Close your feet. Now pull your knees up and then down without touching the floor with your feet. Up, down… Repeat at least 8 times! This is great for your abs! Extra points for those of you who wear jeans, as jeans add extra resistance and make the exercise more difficult.

Exercise #2: Circles

Sitting on your seat, lift your knees like in the previous exercise and do circles without your feet touching the floor. Repeat at least 8 times, and then do it again circling your knees in the other direction.

Exercise #3: Crossover Lift

As you are sitting, place the ankle of your left leg on top of your right leg. Now push your right leg up. And down. Repeat at least 8 times, and then do it again switching legs.
Again, your foot should not touch the floor.

Exercise #4: Tri Lift

Now place your hand on the bars of your seat. Make sure that you don’t annoy the people that sit next to you, and that your elbows point toward the back instead of outwards. Now lift yourself up using your triceps (the muscles in the back of your arms). Up, and down, up and down…Repeat another 8 times.
Your feet should touch the floor for stability. However, don’t use them to help yourself get up. This is an upper body exercise!
These are just some fun , quick exercises you can do on a plane . A bit of a warning , be sure to ONLY do these exercises when the "FASTEN SEAT BELT" sign is off . Also , in case you are wondering if people will think you are a freak ... they will . But! You will be a healthy freak :-)
We are open EVERYDAY in DECEMBER for your shopping Convenience !

Jamaican "Fever " Grass : Learn its Benefits

REVEllers! I would like to introduce you to a very common herb that most of us may have heard of . Lemon Grass or "Fever" Grass as we call it in Jamaica , is a native plant from India that was brought to our Island during the Indenture ship period in the 1900.

I am sure that most of you who grew up in the rural parts of the island would know of some of its many uses. For those of you who don't , grab a pen and paper and take notes :-)

In Jamaica , Fever grass is more commonly used in a tea at breakfast .This tea according to the "old time" Jamaicans works best when it is extremely hot . This tea is great as a detoxifying treatment that is great for cleansing the liver , kidney , pancreas and bladder . It may also reduce excess fats .

Fever grass has such a strong distinctive smell . The essential oil is used in candle making and soaps and other delightful bath and body products . Reve has fever grass scented oils available in stock. It is even  sometimes used in our store to brighten up our mood and of course your day :-)

Believe it or not , Fever grass can be used to alleviate menstrual cramps and nausea . This is done by boiling it like a tea , then adding pepper! I've tried it and it actually works . However , you need to have a strong stomach and a willing mind

The most common use of fever grass in Jamaica is to aid with illnesses. It is used to cure colds and reduce fever . This is how it actually got is name in the 1900 when there was an outbreak of "Hay" fever . Those who contracted the disease were starting to die out and they were needed on the plantations to carry on work . Some of the other indentured workers realized that when they boiled the Fever Grass in a tea , it reduced the fever significantly . This holistic method of "healing " carried on in our generation today .

Fever grass is also great as a degreaser . For all you ladies who have naturally greasy or oily hair , simply add fever grass to your shampoo and daily moisturizer . You can add it whole or crush the leaves .

The list goes on as it relates to the use of Fever Grass . There are so many locally grown herbs and roots available in our very backyards that we tend to overlook. Instead on spending money on expensive artificial products , do your research and make use of what you have.
