How To Wear your Cinnamon ER, Squared Earrings

Good Morning REVEllers ! Reve is synonymous with all things unique and of course one of a kind  Today , I'll be giving you some tips on how to wear our Cinnamon ER, Earrings from our Spice Collection.

These squared shaped earrings are available in Gold and Copper Tone. The main thing we strive for at Reve is that once you've put on your unique Reve piece , your outfit is complete . I've actually come up with 3 looks for these Earrings

Look 1 : Elegant

These earrings can be worn to a formal night time event with the hair pull up or back but away from the face , with a monochromatic piece . Since these are statement earrings , i would keep the accessories minimal . Maybe a really simple wristwatch , killer heels and a really nice hair accessory that is not too busy  to create a feminine look.

Look 2 : Casual

Great for daytime ! A blazer and a pair of dark denim jeans , pumps or wedges . For this look , i would wear the hair down so that people will only get a glimpse of the earrings which will leave them intrigued .

Look 3 : Bohemian

This has become on of my favourite looks lately . Its really light , free and simple .. yet trendy. I would pair the earrings with a nice print dress , a denim jacket ... and then to finish off the look ... a nice head scarf , tied in either a big bow  ... or the double side wrap .

The Cinnamon ER, Squared Earrings are from our Spice Collection . Stop by out store today at Shop # 13 Devon House , Kingston Jamaica .

The Healthy Breakfast

REVEllers ! Its time for another exciting health tip . As you know , here at Reve , we believe in a Healthy Mind and Body.

Breakfast is the first meal your body has had in 8 hours ( that is if you've maintained a healthy lifestyle and have had 8 hours of sleep) . Believe it or not eating breakfast influences your mood and energy throughout the day. You should therefore eat breakfast everyday .. without exception . Studies show that people who eat breakfast daily are less likely to become obese and have Diabetes than those who don't. Below are some tips on how you can maintain a healthy breakfast even on a budget . I know in Jamaica , most people have complained that doing anything that's "healthy" is a  problem because that type of lifestyle is expensive . Fret not thyself ... these tips as I've said are budget friendly.

  • Be consistent with your portions : "The Perfect Breakfast" consists of three things , one serving of whole grain carbohydrate , one serving of dairy or high calcium food and a serving of fruit . Here are some examples :  Cereal , yogurt , a glass of milk , and an apple.
  • Have half a grapefruit every other day : I recently spoke about this in a post where i mentioned all the wonderful benefits of Grapefruit . However, be cautious if you’re taking regular medications. Grapefruit and its juice can interact with medications that have to be processed through the liver.
  • Have a cup of Green Tea with your Breakfast : I see my parents drink Green Tea everyday and used to think 1. it tastes horrible and 2. it must be really expensive . Both are these are sooo wrong. Green Tea contains Heart -Protective benefits and even has weight loss benefits if consumed everyday . There are now so many brands in the Supermarket that fits every budgets. The next time you are in the tea aisle , be sure not to pass Green Tea :-)
  • Add a Vitamin ! Take any and all supplements with Breakfast . Most people prefer to take their pills after Lunch. However , taking supplements with breakfast reduces chances for an upset stomach.
  • Eat a Banana : This might sound crazy , but bananas are more than just a weird shaped yellow fruit . They are considered as "brain food" and will help you concentrate throughout the day as well as to have clear thoughts. The best part , they are cheap ... i get my bananas for $100-$120 .
  • Add Chocolate : Here's a crazy twist ... chocolate , for breakfast? Yes and No ... I'm not making reference to Kit Kat Bars and Twix . Instead , Hot Chocolate or Cocoa . Dark chocolate contains antioxidants great for keeping illnesses away . Swiss Miss is a popular brand , and you can get a small box in the supermarket for a little over $300 , with  around 6-9 small packets.

I really hope these tips will help somebody to change their current breakfast habits and take up a healthier alternative . Also , as I've said in tip 1 , you should try to incorporate the 3 breakfast things at all times . I 'm not saying you should have those alone at every sitting as you would not be full. There is a rule of thumb that goes " Eat a Heavy Breakfast , light Lunch and Moderate Dinner" . Go at your own pace and embrace healthy living.

Jamaican Honey: How To Make A Honey Facial Mask

REVEllers ! I hope i find you all in good health . If you are feeling a bit down today , i hope this post will cheer you up . Today we will be looking at our very own Raw Jamaican Honey. Believe it or not , Honey has so many health benefits , not only does it tastes good , but its really good for you too :-)

Before i get into telling you how to make a delicious Honey Face Mask , let me tell you about some other health benefits.

Anti-bacterial Properties : Honey when diluted with water is great for fighting plaque and also prevents the growth of new bacteria .

Facial Cleanser: To some , this might sound a bit daunting , but honey can be used daily to wash your face. It removes dirt from your pores , prevents acne , reduces inflammation and redness. It was also found that it literally removes blackheads! Have you ever wondered why most high end beauty products contain honey? Well now you know of its benefits you might want to think twice before spending a few extra bucks on that product , when you can buy a bottle of honey that costs less and will also last you a longer time. For a quick home made scrub , mix honey with oatmeal or even cornmeal and in an instant you have your very own exfoliator :-)

Colds and Sore Throat : There is an old Jamaican remedy called "Honey and Lime" , whereby the Honey is mixed with Lime to alleviate sore throats and prepares the common cold for "flight" . This might not be the best tasting remedy , but it works . I can attest to it as a child growing up with Asthma who constantly had colds . For even better results , combine honey with a spoonful of sugar and a clove of garlic to remove phlegm from your stomach.

Indigestion: When mixed with Ginger it is a good digestive aid due to the inherent digestive properties of ginger. Further both ginger and honey have antioxidant properties thereby increasing the immunity of the body. Therefore, consumption of one tea spoonful of ginger and honey tonic is very useful for people who have a weak digestive system. This is great as it soothes the nerves and generally calms you down .

Below is the Recipe for a Honey and Lavender Facial Mask

RAW Honey and Lavender Facial Mask

You will need:
1 tablespoon RAW honey
3 drops lavender essential oil
Mix the ingredients, dampen your face with warm water, and smooth on the honey and lavender mixture. Leave the mask on for 15 minutes. Then rinse off with warm water

This is great for all skin types

Crystal Healing : Jasper

Hi REVEllers , the last time we spoke about Crystals , we learnt that "Crystal Healing is an alternative method of healing by placing crystals on or around the body to remove negative energy and restore balance". Today , i would like to go a bit deeper and speak about a specific type of crystal since i just generally introduced you to this phenomenon last time.

In the spirit of "Twilight" we'll be looking at Jasper.  Jasper is known as the "nurturing" stone . It is used to calm aggressive energy and facilitates safety and protection during recovery periods for example (operations, stress, and other traumas in life.If you have a sharp temper or quick tongue any form of Jewellery or Accessory containing Jasper will calm you right down.

Types of Jasper

There are three main types of Jasper used in Crystal Healing : Red, Yellow and Green.

Red Jasper provides a fresh lively energy and also reduces feelings of being victimized . If you work in a stressful environment where you have colleagues who constantly blame your for their short comings , invest in something that has Red Jasper.

Yellow Jasper balances hormones and protects during travel.

Green Jasper restores energy and focus during a burnout. Instead of turning to harmful substances , get yourself Green Jasper :-)

How To Clean Your Jewellery at Home

REVEllers , as you know, we offer a wide range of services at our Devon House Store . One of those services is Jewellery Cleaning . For those of you who might be in need of a "Quick Fix", these tips are for you . These are products that you can find in your own home.

Toothpaste

Put a little toothpaste on an old toothbrush and use it to make your diamond ring sparkle instead of your teeth. Clean off the residue with a damp cloth. This is one of the methods my Mother used back in the day when we could not make it to the Jewellery store to get our pieces cleaned .

Aluminum Foil

To clean your jewelry, simply line a small bowl with aluminum foil. Fill the bowl with hot water and mix in one tablespoon of bleach-free powdered laundry detergent (not liquid), like Tide. Put the jewelry in the solution and let it soak for one minute. Rinse well and air-dry. This procedure makes use of the chemical process known as ion exchange, which can also be used to clean silverware.

Ammonia

Brighten up your gold and silver trinkets by soaking them for 10 minutes in a solution of 1/2 cup clear ammonia mixed in 1 cup warm water. Gently wipe clean with a soft cloth and let dry. Note: Do not do this with jewelry containing pearls, because it could dull or damage their delicate surface.

Vinegar

Make your silverware — as well as your pure silver bracelets, rings, and other jewelry — shine like new by soaking them in a mixture of 1/2 cup white vinegar and 2 tablespoons baking soda for two to three hours. Rinse them under cold water and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.

Warm Water

Simply soak your Jewellery in warm water and mild soap for an hour. Use an old tooth to reach those really small spaces. Dry with smooth dry rag to "polish" and in an instant your Jewellery will be like new .

If you prefer to get your pieces professionally cleaned , stop into our store today at Shop #13 Devon House .

How to Get Bootylicious For Christmas and New Years!

REVEllers! As promised , Wednesday is the official day for all things health . Today , i saw it "fit" ( pun intended ) to look at ways you can lift , tone , and generally improve your derriere . Christmas and New Years is right around the corner . Here in Jamaica , we have tons of parties around those times . The last thing any of you would want is a less than perfect butt that droops and sags in those body hugging dresses. Before i go any further , i should give a fair warning :  " There are no magic pills or potions that will transform your butt over night that will instantly give you a Kardashian butt ", ( unless you know a really good plastic surgeon) Don't believe everything you see on t.v . You can have a perfect behind with exercise and a balanced diet . With that being said , let's jump into it !

Warming Up
Whether you are a Beginner or Expert, WARMING UP IS IMPORTANT !! It increases blood flow to the heart and muscles. It also causes an onset of early sweating . To warm up you would simply , inhale while extending your arms out then raising them over your head , then exhale by slowly dropping them to your sides . Do this for about 5-10 mins.
Curtsy Lunge
Stand on your left foot with your right foot extended out to the side and hands on your hips.  Step your right foot behind your left foot out from your hip and placing the weight onto the heel of your left foot.  Bend both knees into a “curtsy”.  Then push off from your left foot, back to your starting position, and touch your rights toes out to the right.  Switch sides, stepping your left foot behind your right repeating the “curtsy” on the other side.  Repeat, alternating sides. Do 15-20 reps.  One rep equals one lunge on each side.
Standing Leg Kick Back

Stand with your heels together and toes out, rotating from your hips, abs pulled in, spine lengthened, and arms reaching overhead in a “V” position. Make sure your shoulders are back and down.  Standing on your left leg, lift your right foot and place it behind your left knee.  Then extend your leg to the back with your knee bent and leg turned out.  Maintain your arms in the “V” position.  Return the foot to the knee and pulse it back up to the lifted position.  Repeat, and then switch sides.  Do 15-20 reps on each side.
Kneeling Donkey Supreme

Get on all fours with your hands under your shoulders and your knees under your hips.  Make sure your back is flat.  Contract your abs.  Lift your right knee off the floor and pull it straight in toward your chest.  Press your right foot back and up behind you as high as you can without arching your back.  Lower your leg slowly until your toe touches the floor.  Raise your leg again, this time bent at a 90 degrees angle, pulsing your heel toward the ceiling for 5 counts.  Straighten your leg and raise your right leg behind you again and lower it down back to the floor.  Go directly into a “hydrant”, bending your leg and lifting it to the side, as if you were a dog using a fire hydrant.  Release down and repeat the sequence again.  When finished with right leg, switch to left leg. Do 10 reps on each side.
Raised Clam

Lie on your right side with your right arm extended, resting your head on your upper arm.  Bring your straight legs forward until they are about 45 degrees.  Bend your knees, so that your heels are in line with your spine and your hips are stacked on top of the other.  Lift both feet off the floor, pointing your heels up toward the ceiling.  Keeping your feet together, rotate and raise your top knee up and to the back, rotating your leg from your hip and squeezing the side of your butt and hip.  Slowly bring knees back together and repeat.  Switch to the other side after you completed your reps on the right side.  Do 15-20 reps on each side.

Cooling Down/ "Warming Down " : Like Warming up this is also verrrry important . Your body now needs to transition from an overexertion state to a more restful or near resting state . See the video below .

If done correctly , these Exercises should hurt like crazy ! You might even feel out of breath at some point . I would not recommend doing them all at once if you are a beginner , start with one then as your body begins to get use to it , add another and so on .

Jamaican Beet Root

Hi REVEllers, I really want to designate a day for Alternative Medicine/ Jamaican remedies , I've decided that Tuesday is the day . Look out for posts of that nature every Tuesday :-) Today , i want to look at a Jamaican "root" , that is often over looked because most people are not sure how to use it or they just don't like it . The root I'm talking about is Beet Root.

The Jamaican Beet Root can range from deep red to white and is available all year round. The Beetroot is famous for being combined with other Jamaican Roots to make various traditional drinks that aids with various ailments . Below , i will list a few of the Nutritional benefits of Beetroot , some of these will surprise you.

Regulates Diabetes : If you are diabetic , you might want to incorporate Beetroot in your diet . It actually has natural sugars that are good for your health , instead of the artificial type , that slowly thins the blood.

Improves Digestion : The "Olden " Days Jamaicans would use Beetroot to help with digestion problems and Constipation .

Promotes Weight Loss : Beetroot is high in Calories and rich in Fiber .It also contains essential nutrients , vitamins and minerals that help in reducing belly fat.

Alleviates Menstrual Cramps : For this purpose , it is more effective when mixed with carrots to make a drink . I would also recommend drinking this concoction at least a few weeks before your period as it is said to make your flow heavier because of its naturally rich deep red color .

A glass of beetroot juice daily , helps to reduce High Blood Pressure , as well as Cholesterol Level . Please note , it is not just limited to Carrots . It can be blended with several other Jamaican roots for your benefits . All it takes is a strong stomach and knowledge of how to make it "tasty" :-)

What will you mix your Beetroot with the next time you Purchase it

Discover the Healing Powers of Crystals

T.G.I.F REVEllers ! Before we go off on our weekends , i would like to share some information with you about Crystals . Crystals are more than the precious stones we use in Jewellery making . Crystals are also used in diverse ways for healing yourself and others  There are different Crystals for specific problems . It is believed that Crystals mirror the wholeness of creation" . This is because it is composed of silicon and oxide , two of the most abundant elements on earth . During its formations , vibrations are instilled in crystals and each type of crystal system has energy patterns that determines the way it receives and processes and transmits energy . The healing process of crystals is a bit of a sensitive matter. It varies for each person . It is beneficial to those who are sensitive to their own vibrations : people who are "centered" and are at peace with themselves. The following list was taken from CrystalHealing.com and highlights a number of ailments and diseases that crystals are said to cure :

  • AIDS/HIV
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Anorexia
  • Seizures
  • Depression
  • Epilepsy
  • Cancer
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Scoliosis
  • Tumours

Quartz Crystals are the Universal stone. Most healing with begin with this because of it's clarity and the fact that it can be programmed and re-programmed with energy. Who programs the energy? A person who has extensive knowledge and experience working with Crystals. Working with Crystals will not result in miraculous healing , it is however the step to a new life . It is a form of "New Age Alternative Medicine" and is entertained by the Philosophical school of thought. As mentioned earlier , everyone experiences crystals differently , some people will feel a tingling while others will feel nothing at all. The main thing to remember is that when embarking on  any healing , be it for yourself or someone else , keep in your mind that it is for the highest good that you seek . If unconditional love is your motivation and good intentions your drive ( not control or power) the universe will manifest healing to you.

Eat Up For a Flat Belly!

Here at Reve , we promote a Healthy Lifestyle. A Healthy Mind Body and Spirit. "If you treat your body good , then your body will be good to you", it's that simple . Today , i will be sharing with you some tips on what to eat for a flat belly . This might sound strange to some " Eat for a Flat Belly". From a young age we've always heard "Maintain a balanced diet .. Eat things that are good for you". The food below are relatively inexpensive and can be found everywhere.

1. Almonds and Other Nuts : With all the searches and books I've come across relating to a Flat belly , i saw Almonds and nuts. Almonds build muscle and reduce food cravings . It also fights obesity , heart disease , muscle loss , cancer and high bloods pressure . Now you know why Almonds and nuts are always recommended as " healthy snacks" , instead of eating that slice of cheese cake between meals .For best results , eat them with skins/shells in tact. The great thing about nuts is that they come in a variety and they are inexpensive and can be found everywhere .

2. Beans and Legumes : These do not just make you "gassy" it has actual health benefits . It builds muscle , help burn fat and regulates digestion :-)

3. Iced Coffee : Coffee is an appetite suppressant . It increases your metabolism and gives you a shot of antioxidants . If your metabolism has been "super- charged " you will therefore have more energy . This simply means that your body gains weight at a really slow rate. It generally converts the excess calories into energy , thus helping you to maintain that flat belly .Tip: start your day with an 8 ounce coffee ( reg sized mug) or a "Tall" from Rituals Coffee House Jamaica . That is if you are an "avid coffee drinker" like myself :-)

4. Grape fruit : Did you know that people who eat half a grapefruit 3 times a day can lose up to 4 pounds in 12 weeks? It doesn't sound like a lot , but that's amazing by just eating Grapefruit continuously. The acidity in Grapefruits may slow down your rate of digestion , keeping you full for a longer period of time.

5. Apple : "An apple a day keeps extra weight away". Apples are a great source of Vitamin C and also "belly filling " fiber . Ever wondered why you always feel so full after eating a piece of apple? It's because it requires a lot of chewing , which actually makes you think you are eating more than you actually are . If eaten 15 minutes before lunch , you will take in less fat than is required .

6. Eggs: We know that eggs are a great source of protein . Eating Eggs in the morning can also help to control your hunger later in the day . Eggs are also great for muscle building which is why most Men who are trying to build mass will consume raw eggs in the morning . People who eat eggs in the morning are less likely to over eat the rest of the day .

These are the most common "Flat Belly Foods" i came across that are inexpensive and readily available . My main goal was to share with you that you can maintain a healthy lifestyle by using what you have around you . Be sure to check here every Wednesday to see our "Healthy Lifestyle" posts .

The Amazing Powers of Jamaican Ginger

In Jamaica , we love Ginger . There are treats such as Ginger Biscuits , 'Drops ( which is a sweet treat with coconuts and ginger , Ginger Beer and the list goes on. While Ginger is a staple item in most of our foods, many of us are not aware of its health benefits .  Below you can find some health benefits of "Good Old Jamaican" Ginger .

Ginger for Nausea :

Ginger is often used to calm nausea , motion sickness and also the after effects of surgery . The harshness of its flavor slowly burns away all uneasiness from that layer of the stomach. The intake of Ginger actually controls the movements of the gastrointestinal tract. For this , i recommend Ginger Beer or Ginger Tea .  These have been used as "stomach settlers" for many generations in various parts of the island. Pregnant women especially , use ginger to ward off morning sickness. Some women even believe it helps to relieve menstrual cramps.

To make Ginger tea , you simply wash and crush Ginger . Place in boiling water . Leave to Boil for three -four minutes . For better results , be sure to cover  your pot , so that the flavor of the ginger is maintained.

Ginger for Gall Stones :

The Intake of Gimger triggers the release of bile from the gall bladder which will result in healing the problem over a period of time.

Ginger for High Cholesterol :

Diabetes is one of the major diseases plaguing many Jamaican People .Ginger, if taken by Diabetics and people who suffer from heart problems is believed to lower the cholesterol content in the blood.

Here are some other Health benefits of Ginger:

  • It reduces toothache and the discomfort that arises due to the infection in the upper respiratory tract due to its antibacterial and anti-fungal nature.
  • Applying fresh Ginger Juice to minor skin burns and skin irritants provides immediate relief for most people ( depending on skin type of course)
  • It is an effective treatment in Cold and Flu because of its warming action.
  • It is a mouth freshener and Ginger Tea is well know for its refreshing properties.
  • It is a mood enhancer . Ginger oils are often used in Salons and Spas for aromatherapy . The Cinole in Ginger also relieves stress.
  • It also relieves sore throat
Did You Know ?  Ginger root is actually an underground stem rather than an actual root . It can be harvested all year round. The hotter and spicier it is , the better it is when used as a medicinal herb.
